Im Frühjahr 1979 wurde ein Teil der Hermannstraße in eine Fußgängerzone umgewandelt. Zu diesem Anlass waren der Ministerpräsident von Nordrhein-Westfalen Johannes Rau und der Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Dortmund Günter Samtlebe anwesend.
