the German Congo Expedition, and visited the Congo between 1884 and 1886. In 1890 he wrote Reisen im Kongolande about his travels. In 1890–91 he was in charge of a research station in Togo. Büttner was also interested in entomology.
Büttner is commemorated in the scientific name of a species of African lizard, Trachylepis buettneri.
