Der Holzstich zeigt eine Erzählsituation: eine alte Frau sitzt am Boden an einen Tisch gelehnt und erzählt drei vor ihr sitzenden, andächtig lauschenden Kindern eine Geschichte.
Unten mittig in der Abbildung steht der Name des Künstlers: A. M. Seitz invedtis, rechts der Name des Stechers: C. v. N. Benzinger.
Darunter der Titel: Es war einmal...
Es handelt sich bei diesem Blatt um einen Ausschnitt aus einer Zeitung.
Rechts unten ist mit Bleistift das Jahr 1890 notiert.
