According to legend, this carpet was found in the crypt of Danylo Apostol in the village of Velyki Sorochyntsi and was used in his funeral rite. Hetman was buried with all honors in the crypt of the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral. On May 15 of 1922 the tomb was robbed. A special commission removed things of historical and artistic value from the burial. Part of the jewelry was lost while the rest was scattered among various institutions. Two 18th century kilims that belonged to Danylo Apostol were found only in 1941 at the Krolevets Art Technical College. A feature of this carpet is the image of two double-headed eagles with state symbols in its central part. In the 18th century such a decorative element as a symbol of power and "gracious reverence" was used on the objects of decorative and applied art as a sign of the ruling Cossack nobility.
