"Goldsmith in Nuremberg, pupil of Samuel Spillmann in Bern and later of Wenzel Jamnitzer (q.v). Citizen of Nuremberg 1571, Master 1572. Court goldsmith in Heidelberg 1578-80, later coin-cutter in Danzig. 1589 in Nuremberg working for Rudolph II on a great 'Weltallschale', now in Berlin. Generally now identified with the Monogrammist IS or Johannes Stephanus who made oval and circular punched ornament engravings of figures and creatures in landscapes."
