Das erste StarTAC wurde am 3.1.1996 in den USA eingeführt. Es war das welterste Klapphandy und mit seinen 88 Gramm damals das kleinste und leichteste Mobiltelefon der Welt. Als Design-Vorlage gilt der Communicator aus Star Trek. Trotz des hohen Preises von circa 1.500 US-Dollar wurde das StarTAC insgesamt 60 Millionen Mal verkauft. In den 2010er-Jahren gab es sogar eine Neuauflage der Modelle. Das TIME-Magazine kürte es als eines der besten Gadgets der letzten neunzig Jahre.
