Description

This head belonged to a male statuette that served as a votive offering or burial gift in antiquity. The piece, together with the female head (1913.213), comes from Carl Humann (1839-1896), the "discoverer" of the ruins of Pergamon, who was apparently acquainted with the Seligmann family. Mrs Johanna Seligmann donated it to the Kestner Museum in 1913 to complete its collection of antiquities. Johanna Seligmann was the wife of the Continental boss. The inventory card from 1913 shows the following entry: "Gift from Mrs Kommerzienrat Seeligmann [sic], Hanover, whose husband received it from Humann". (AVS)
