Seit der Spätantike wurden wichtige Altäre in Kirchen mit baldachinartigen Überbauten, sogenannte Ziborien, betont. Die vorhandene Platte bildete das Seitenteil eines quadratischen Ziboriums. In der Tradition langobardischer Werkstätten steht das bereits in der Antike bekannte Flechtmotiv, das aufgrund seiner schier unerschöpflichen Variationsmöglichkeiten von größter Bedeutung für die Kunst des Mittelalters wurde.
