Even in ancient times, the camel played an important role as a beast of burden and mount in the Levant, Egypt, Syria and, of course, Arabia. Greeks and Romans encountered them above all along the great trade routes to Arabia and on to India. But camels were also used in the competition arenas of the Roman Empire in the animal races (munera). (AVS)
