Der Leipziger Kunsttischler Friedrich Gottlob Hoffmann (1741 - 1806) war einer der innovativsten Möbelhersteller des Klassizismus in Deutschland. Eine Variante unseres Schreibtisches ist in Hoffmanns erstem Warenkatalog von 1789 gleich auf Tafel 1 zu finden. Geschäfts-Cabinet wird dieses Möbel hier genannt, welches auf einen aus England übernommenen Typ, den "pedestal desk" zurückgeht. Zwei Postamente mit jeweils 3 Schubladen (nur anscheinend 4) werden bei unserem Schreibmöbel von einer Gesimsplatte mit einem Auszug überspannt. Die Schreibfläche lässt sich hochstellen und ein aufstellbares Schreib-Lesepult ermöglicht das Arbeiten im Stehen. Das 1928 im Berliner Auktionshaus Cassirer & Helbing versteigerte Möbel stammt aus Schloss Crossen. Hier verbrachte die Schriftstellerin Elisabeth von Heyking ihren Lebensabend.
