Der Siebenschläfer erhielt seinen Namen wegen seines sieben Monate dauernden Winterschlafs. Die tatsächliche Ruhephase dauert jedoch oftmals noch deutlich länger: von Anfang September bis Anfang Mai. Der Siebenschläfer ist - neben Gartenschläfer und Haselmaus - eine von drei Bilcharten, die bei uns in Rheinland-Pfalz vorkommen. In Rheinhessen fehlt diese Art jedoch - hier dominiert der Gartenschläfer. Erst in den Mittelgebirgslagen tritt der Siebenschläfer häufiger auf.
