Der Kuckuck ist ein typischer Brutparasit, der seine Eier in die Nester kleinerer Singvögel legt. Der weibliche Kuckuck legt pro Brutsaison bis zu 25 Eiern, im Durchschnitt jedoch nur neun. Pro Nest wird in der Regel ein Ei abgelegt. Aus dem Gelege des Wirtsvogels wird dafür ein Ei entfernt. Das Kuckucksei ist meist etwas größer als die Eier des Wirtsvogels, farblich aber optimal an diese angepasst. Jedes Kuckucksweibchen bevorzugt eine Wirtsvogelart. Rohrsänger gehören zu den bevorzugten Wirtsvogelarten, insgesamt sind aus Mitteleuropa aber über 100 Wirtsvogelarten bekannt.
