Der „Short Message Service“ (SMS) wurde 1995 eingeführt. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt sah wohl noch niemand den überragenden Erfolg der 160-Zeichen-Mitteilung vor allem in Deutschland voraus: Versenden die Deutschen 1996 noch 100 Millionen SMS, ergeben Schätzungen ca. 58 Milliarden versandte Kurzmitteilungen für das Jahr 2012.
