Bittersalz bzw. Epsomit wird im Pflanzenbau insbesondere zur Sicherstellung der Magnesumversorgung der Pflanze eingesetzt. Dieser Pflanzennährstoff ist ein zentraler Baustein des Chlorophyll und bei Mangelerscheinungen wird die Photosynthese der Pflanzen beeinträchtigt. In der Medizin dient es - ähnlich wie das chemisch verwandte Glaubersalz - als Abführmittel. Das Bittersalz im Schauglas ist zur besseren Dosierbarkeit in Landwirtschaft und Gartenbau granuliert. Das Schauglas besitzt einen zylindrischen Körper mit halbkugelförmigem oberen Abschluss. Der untenliegende Hals hat eine zylindrische Zone für das Beschriftungsetikett und einen abschließenden Wulst. Der zum Fuß geformte gläserne Deckelstopfen verschließt mit seinem eingeschliffenen Konus das Gefäß. Die Formnähte sind deutlich erkennbar.
