Dübel in der Knopfgegend weisen darauf hin, dass das Instrument einstmals eine Viola d´amore mit 6 Resonanzsaiten war. Der Umbau in die jetzige Form mit einem kurzen Bratschenhals mit der Mensur von nur 138 mm erfolgte um die Mitte des 19. Jh. oder früher. Vor 1900 wurde der Hals verschmalert und und auf die Breite eines Geigenhalses gebracht.
