Palaeoniscum freieslebeni, ist ein bisweilen auch als „Kupferschiefer-Hering“ bezeichneter Knochenfisch, der vor rund 255 Mio. Jahren im Zechsteinmeer lebte und heute ausgestorben ist. Typisch für diesen Fisch sind die kräftigen rhomischen Ganoidschuppen (Schmelzschuppen), die sich in Versteinerungen meist gut erhalten.
