1967 wurde auf dem in der Schlacht um Stalingrad umkämpften Mamajew-Hügel der erste große Denkmalskomplex zur Erinnerung an den Großen Vaterländischen Krieg eröffnet. Im Mittelpunkt steht die 85 Meter hohe Skulptur "Mutter Heimat", nach der dieses Gussmodell angefertigt ist. Die meisten sowjetischen Kriegsdenkmäler erinnern an den Sieg, die Heldentaten der Roten Armee und die Gefallenen. Für die zivilen Opfer sind erst in jüngerer Zeit vermehrt Denkmäler entstanden.
