Polyhalit ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Sulfate“. Im Werra-Salinar geht man beim Polyhalit von einem Umwandlungsprodukt unter dem Einfluss des Vulkanismus aus. Neben Kalium und Magnesium enthält Polyhalit auch Calcium. Das reine Minaral ist farblos, es kann jedoch durch Fremdbeimengungen aber auch grauweiß, braun, rosarot oder rotbraun sein. In dieser rosaroten Stufe zeigt sich der Polyhalit als schuppig-faseriges Mineral-Aggregat, das durch eine Schicht von Halit-Kristallen überkrustet ist..
