Reaktionsgefäße dieser Art dienen u.a. zur Herstellung von Kunststoffen durch Polymerisation von Monomeren. In diesem Rührkessel wurde Polyvinylchlorid (PVC) erzeugt. Die großtechnische Produktion von PVC erfolgte erstmals 1935 in den USA und fast zeitgleich in Deutschland: 1937 in Bitterfeld, 1938 in Schkopau. Weltweit werden heute über 20 Mill. t pro Jahr hergestellt. In 50 solchen gleichzeitig betriebenen Kesseln wurden in den Chemischen Werken Buna Schkopau zwischen 1970 und 1990 über 1 Mill. t PVC produziert. Mit dieser Menge könnte man ein Druckrohr von 250 mm Durchmesser fertigen, das 4-mal um die Erde gelegt werden kann.
