Der Schweizer Verleger, Maler, Grafiker und Idyllendichter Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) ist hier in einem Stich von Johann Friedrich Bause (1738-1814) nach einem Gemälde von Anton Graff porträtiert. Winckelmann schätzte Gessners bukolische Poesie sehr. In seiner Funktion als Verleger holte sich Gessner bei Winckelmann hinsichtlich typographischer Fragen rat ein, insbesondere zur Wahl der lateinischen Antiqua oder der gotischen Frakturschrift -Typen.
