Die 1898 in Japan gegründete Nippon Electric Company (NEC) trat Ende der 1980er gegen die Dominanz von Motorola an. Mit dem 9A brachte NEC ein kleines und leichtes Gerät mit einer Vielzahl an Funktionen auf den Markt. Das Adressbuch fasste 60 Nummern samt Namen. LCD-Display sowie Tastatur waren beleuchtet und der integrierte Lautsprecher erlaubte Freihandbedienung. Trotz des hohen Preises von 1.795 britischen Pfund war das NEC 9A 1988 Großbritanniens meist verkauftes Handy.
