Der nach links springende braune Löwengreif gibt eine Wandmalerei aus dem Arbeitszimmer des Hauses der Walkerei (Fullonica) des M. Vesonius Primus in Pompeji (VI 14, 21-24) wieder. Sie wurde in den Jahren von 1874-1876 ausgegraben. Das ursprünglich samnitische Patrizierhaus wurde im 1. Jh.n.Chr., vermutlich nach dem schweren Erdbeben des Jahres 62 n.Chr. umgebaut und mit neuen Wandmalereien ausgestattet.. Motive mit Fabeltieren waren im IV. Stil der pompejanischen Wandmalerei besonders beliebt. (Stephanie-Gerrit Bruer)
