Das Gemälde zeigt drei Männer vor einer verwitterten Turmruine. Die Männer tragen Hüte und haben Wanderstäbe bei sich. Links von ihnen steht eine intakte Mauer, auf einem Wall. Rechts von ihnen befindet sich ein Fluss an dem mehrere Leute stehen.
Im Hintergrund ist ein Berg, möglicherweise der Vesuv, angedeutet.
