Das Bild zeigt den heiligen Kirchenvater Hieronymus (347-420) in rotem Gewand mit einer roten Kappe auf dem kopf in seiner Studierstube sitzend. Der kopf ist in den Arm gestützt, mit der linken Hand blättert er lesend in einem Buch. Vor ihm auf dem Tisch liegen eine Brille, weitere Bücher, ein Totenschädel. Links im Bild stehen hinter ihm ein Globus, weitere Bücher und eine Geige. Ein direkt im Vordergrund liegender Zettel ist beschriftet: Hieronymus / Sive dormiam sive Vigilem sive/ edam sive comedam, sive / bibam sive aliud # semper /sive Vgr # m auridis / Surgite mortui venite ad / judicium
Es handelt sich hierbei um ein apokryphes Hieronymus-Zitat zum jüngsten Gericht.
Hieronymus wird hier vor allem in seiner Tätigkeit als lateinischer Bibelübersetzer dargestellt. (KSDW)
