Die Basis des großen Nixdorf-Erfolges bildeten Ende der 1960er und Anfang der 1970er Jahre vor allem die Computer der Systemreihe 820. Sie waren universelle Rechner für Unternehmen jeder Größenordnung und durch ihren modularen Aufbau und die konsequente Anwendung des Baukastensystems für nahezu alle Anwendungsgebiete einsetzbar.
