Description

Amaltheus stokesi (SOWERBY, 1818) ist der älteste Vertreter der Amaltheen Schichten (Margaritatus-Zone) im Oberen Pliensbachium, Lias delta 1 (Unterer Jura). Der für Amaltheidae typische Zopfkiel auf der Außenseite und die ewas sichelförmigen Rippen sind gut zu erkennen.

In den stark bitumenhaltigen tonigen Schichten der Herforder Lias-Mulde sind gut erhaltene Exemplare zu finden, die oft - wie hier - im anaeroben Schlamm mit Pyrit (FeS2) überzogen sind. Im gleichen Milieu entstanden auch die milchigweißen Baryt-Ausfällungen.
