Das Kupferstichporträt des französischen Frühaufklärers und Skeptizisten Pierre Bayles (1647-1706) schuf Johann Martin Bernigeroth (1713-1767). Bayle verfasste 1695-1697 ein bemerkenswertes Standardwerk , das "Dictionaire historique et critique". Der deutschen Ausgabe des "Historisch-Kritischen Wörterbuches" von 1741 wurde das Porträt als Titelkupfer vorgesetzt. Winckelmann lernte Bayles Wörterbuchs bereits 1742 in Hadmersleben kennen und schätzen.
