Description

Abgebildet ist Winckelmanns Kenotaph auf dem Friedhof in Triest. Zwischen reichlich Baum- und Strauchbewuchs stehen Fragmente antiker bzw. antikisierender Architektur, in der mittleren Zone, innerhalb einer Rundbogennische eines Grabbaus, befindet sich das Denkmal.
Auf Anregung Domenico Rossettis (1774-1842) schuf Antonio Bosa (1780-1845), ein Schüler Antonio Canovas, 1822 zum Gedenken an Winckelmanns Tod den Kenotaph. Für das zunächst zur Aufstellung in der Kathedrale von San Giusto bestimmte Grabmal entstanden in der Folgezeit zahlreiche Entwürfe.
