Monte ist ein Ort oberhalb von Funchal, der mit einer Seilbahn zu erreichen ist. Wegen seiner schönen Lage mit Blick zum Atlantik ist er seit dem 18. Jh. bei Kontinentaleuropäern begehrt. Der letzte Kaiser von Österreich Karl I. lebte 1921 mit seiner Familie hier im Exil. Sein Grab befindet sich in der ansässigen Wallfahrtskirche Nossa Senhora do Monte. Im 16. Jh. soll einem Hirtenmädchen die Muttergottes erschienen sein; als sein Vater am selben Ort einen Marienstatue gefunden haben soll, errichteten die Bewohner hier eine Wallfahrtskapelle. Alljährlich finden im August Wallfahrten der Bewohner Madeiras statt. Entsprechende Devotionalien sind in einem kleinen Geschäft neben der Kirche zu erwerben.
