Der Schutzpatron von Florenz war Johannes der Täufer, was die zahlreichen Darstellungen des Heiligen erklärt, die während der Renaissance in der Stadt entstanden sind. Hier zog es der anonyme Bildhauer vor, den Heiligen in seiner Jugend darzustellen, von den Entbehrungen seines Lebens in der Wildnis noch nicht gekennzeichnet.

The patron saint of Florence was St John the Baptist, which explains why numerous representations of the saint were made in the city during the Renaissance. Here, the anonymous sculptor has chosen to represent the saint in his youth, not yet marked by the privations of a life in the wilderness.
