Lorenzo de’ Medici, genannt il Magnifico (der Prächtige, 1449-1492), regierte die Florentinische Republik von 1469 bis zu seinem Tod. Er war auch ein Dichter, Humanist und hochgebildeter Mäzen der Künste. Im Jahre 1478 wurde er beinahe das Opfer einer Verschwörung, die von der rivalisierenden Familie Pazzi angeführt wurde: Von dieser Zeit an beschloss Lorenzo, sich durch viele solcher Büsten als eine dominierende und gnadenlose Figur darstellen zu lassen.

Lorenzo de’ Medici, called the Magnificent (1449-1492), was at the head of the Florentine Republic from 1469 until his death. He was also a poet, a humanist and a refined patron of the arts. In 1478, a conspiracy led by the rival Pazzi family almost took his life: from then on, Lorenzo decided to represent himself with many busts of this type, showing him as a dominating and merciless figure.
