Ins Leben gerufen wurde "Jugend trainiert für Olympia" 1969 vom damaligem Chefredakteur und Herausgeber der Zeitschrift "Stern" Henri Nannen , dem NOK-Chef Willi Daume und der Konferenz der Kultusminister.
"Jugend trainiert für Olympia" startete als Talentwettbewerb in Hinblick auf die Olympischen Spiele 1972 in München mit den Sportarten Leichtathletik und Schwimmen. Das Plakat bewirbt das "2. Finale im Berliner Olympia-Stadion" im September 1970.
