Die kleine Tafel zeigt Maria in liebevoller Umarmung mit dem Jesuskind vor einer kargen, wüstenartigen Landschaft. Den größten Teil des Formates nimmt der sorgsam verzierte Goldgrund ein. Es handelt sich um eine Endzeitvision: Der Evangelist Johannes beschreibt die Madonna im Neuen Testament, als „ein Weib, mit der Sonne bekleidet“. Maria wurde daher seit dem 14. Jahrhundert üblicherweise von einer Sonne hinterfangen dargestellt. Auf dem Berliner Bild befinden sich jedoch Sonne und Mond zu ihren Füßen, eine wohl einzigartige Anordnung. Der aus dem Bildraum hinaus nach rechts gerichtete Blick der Maria sowie die feine Marmorierung der Rückseite lassen vermuten, dass es sich um den linken Flügel eines ursprünglich zweiteiligen Kunstwerkes handelt.| Britta Bode |--Hier Übersetzung--:::::::::::::::::::::: The small panel portrays Maria in a loving embrace with baby Jesus in front of a sparse, desert-like landscape. The carefully ornamented gold base takes up most of the format. Depicted here is an apocalyptic vision: John the evangelist describes the Madonna in the New Testament as a „woman clothed with the sun”. Since the 14th century, Maria was usually portrayed framed by the sun. On the Berlin work the sun and the moon lay at her feet, a highly unusual formation.
