Im Alter von nur etwa 19 Jahren vermählte sich Margaret Burr (1728-1798) 1747 mit dem Maler. Frau Gainsborough galt als sehr hübsch, liebenswürdig und tugendhaft. Angeblich war sie die Tochter eines Herzogs. Dieser Umstand diente ihr als Rechtfertigung für prachtvolle Toilette. Gainsborough hat in für ihn charakteristischer Weise das Modell in den Landschaftsraum integriert. Hierdurch konnte dieser als psychologischer "Resonanzboden" genutzt werden. Das Berliner Bild, von unerhörter malerischer Brillanz bestimmt, wird im englischen Modebad Bath entstanden sein, wo sich der Künstler bis 1760 aufhielt. Neben Reynolds war Gainsborough der bedeutendste englische Maler des 18.
