Der Dargestellte berief Petitot, den damals hervorragendsten Emailmaler, etwa 1650 als Hofmedailleur nach Versailles. Nach der Aufhebung des Edikts von Nantes im Jahr 1685 wurde der Künstler wegen seines protestantischen Glaubens verfolgt, so dass er sich 1687 in seine Genfer Heimat zurückzog. Minutiös ist die Farbe auf den dünnen Emailbildträger vor dem Schmelzen gepunktet worden. Nicht zuletzt daher gewinnt die Gestalt des Sonnenkönigs im Kürass ein brillantes Aussehen. Das Bildnis könnte auf den erfolgreichen »Mars« Bezug nehmen, der bekanntlich mit Hilfe seiner tüchtigen Generale gewaltige Reichsgebiete annektiert hatte. Der zugehörige, fein getriebene Goldrahmen mit blau emailliertem Saum belegt rückseitig, dass die Miniatur ursprünglich in die Deckeloberfläche einer kostbaren Dose montiert war. Es könnte sich dabei um eine damals sehr beliebte Form des Staatsgeschenks gehandelt haben.| Prestel-Museumsführer - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017 ::::::::::::::__ Louis XIV appointed Petitot, the outstanding enamel painter of the time, to be court medal-maker in Versailles in about 1650. The artist was persecuted for his Protestant faith after revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and returned home to Geneva in 1687. The paint was meticulously dabbed on to the thin (single colour) enamel support before melting, which is one of the main reasons for the brilliant appearance of the king in his cuirass. The portrait could be a reference to the successful “Mars”, who was well known to have conquered massive areas of the Empire with his capable generals. The finely chased gold frame with a blue enamelled edge shows that the miniature must have originally been mounted in the top of the lid of a valuable box.
