The classic palaestra utensils we know from depictions in vase paintings, reliefs or other depictions that have come down to us are a set consisting of a scraper (strigilis) for cleaning the skin, an anointing vessel called aryballos, which contained the body oil, and a sponge for wet cleaning. The required items were usually worn on a leather strap on the wrist. However, numerous examples have also survived that show special carrying rings on which the implements hung. (AVS)
