Description

The Attic potter Nikosthenes ran a workshop in Athens between 545 and 510 BC. He is known for signing his products: ΝΙΚΟΣΤΗΕΝΕΣ ΕΠΟΙΕΣΕΝ (Nikosthenes epoíesen). This ribbon-handled amphora belongs to the important group of amphorae from his workshop, which is oriented in form to Etruscan amphorae of the Bucchero technique. The reflex to the range of shapes of Etruscan vessel ceramics can be explained by the fact that Nikosthenes produced mainly for export to Etruria, especially Caere and Vulci. (AVS)
