Description

A wooden jar for milking resp. for milk from Namibia. The handle consists of a leather band and is sideways fixed to the jar at two wooden eyelets.

The object was a gift from the Feldwebel-Leutnant (lieutenant) Friedrich Wenning (*1873) to the City of Ulm that forwarded it to the Gewerbemuseum (Museum of Applied Arts) in February 1907.

From 1905 until the end of 1906 Wenning was part of the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe für Deutsch-Südwestafrika (Imperial Schutztruppe/Protection Force for German South West Africa) in present Namibia. According to the information in the inventory, the jar comes from a camp of Johannes Christian near Warmbad. Johannes Christian was the Kaptein of the Bondelswart since 1903 who revolted from 1903 on against the German colonial occupation and who fought together with the Nama starting in 1904 against the colonial Schutztruppe. As a member of the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe, Wenning was likely to be involved in the militant conflicts. It is possible that he took possession of the jar in the course of the chase of the Bondelswart soldiers who had to leave their camp in a hurry
