Jar from Ancient Peru, Moche civilization, probably Early Intermediate, Phase I - II, ca. 100 - 300 AD.
The vessel is made from red clay with a yellowish slip and has red geometric paintings on its belly. The belly is formed spherically. The vessel has a hollow handle that is formed like a stirrup and serves as spout.
So-called stirrup spout vessels were a common type of jars in the Moche civilization.
The Museum of the City of Ulm bought the jar together with four other Peruvian vessels from art dealer Dr. Franz Xaver Weizinger.
