Description

Semicircular head and oval foot plate. Ten buttons were formerly attached to the head plate. A beaded wire is missing from the upper end of the stirrup. Niello triangular bands on the middle degree of the stirrup and on the edges of the plate. The head plate and foot plate show animal ornamentation in Style I. Based on the stylistic elements and the best parallels, the brooch was probably made in Pannonia before 568 and imported to Italy by the Lombards.Herbert Kühn assigns the brooch to his "Castel Trosino" type. However, his dating is too recent. (L. Grunwald)
