Description

Fruit in the shape of a quince or an apple, the surface of which is divided into five parts by vertical caesurae. Created in the style of Rhodian models, such as those found in a tomb at Kamiros on Rhodes.
The quince was sacred to the goddess Aphrodite. Thus, this fruit is found in various contexts, such as a 'coat of arms' symbol. The coins of the island of Melos show the quince and thus refer to the connection with Aphrodite. (AVS)
