Dionysus was considered the inventor of wine and the founder of the wreath of ivy, which promised cooling and mitigated the consequences of drinking too much wine: "It [the ivy] confuses the mind, but, drunk to excess, cleanses the head [...]". (Plin. nat. 24.75). (AVS)
