Die Kieselholzsammlung als international einzigartige Sammlung ist konzeptioneller Schwerpunkt des Museums für Naturkunde. darunter befinden sich auch permineralisierte Hölzer und Verkieselungen (sog. Hornsteine oder Silizite) aus zahlreichen (z.T. inzwischen erschöpften) Fundstellen der Erde aller Kontinente einschließlich der Antarktis.
