Ein Butterfass mit Stöße
Nachdem die Milch in einer Milchsatte oder mit einer Zentrifuge in Magermilch und Sahne getrennt wurde, wurde die Sahne in das Butterfass gegeben und lange und schnell gestampft, biss die Sahne klumpt und zu einer knetbaren Masse wurde. Dieser anstrengende und mühselige Arbeit wurde später durch die Dreh-Butterfässer erleichtert.
