Description

The statuette shows a lantern bearer who has fallen asleep with his lantern in front of his knees, perhaps while waiting for his master.
A large proportion of Roman slaves were domestic slaves who worked in different fields. They belonged to the familia, which included everyone living in a household. Legally, the slave was a thing and in this legal position was equal to domestic animals. (AVS)
