Es hat seinen Namen von der Ähnlichkeit mit einem kleinen, flachen Schiff, in dessen Innerem die Spule für den Schussfaden befestigt ist. Andererseits erleichtert die äußere Form des Schiffchens sein Hin- und Herschieben durch das Webfach zwischen den Kettfäden
