Hughes betűíró távírógépek és szalagra író aritmikus távgépírók esetében arra használták a szalagnedvesítőt, hogy a papírszalag hátoldalát benedvesítsék. Így az üzenetet tartalmazó, letépett papírszalagot közvetlenül a távirati űrlapra lehetett ragasztani.
