About the museum
Муніципальна інституція, завдання якої дослідити, осмислити та презентувати трагічні сторінки історії середини ХХ ст. у контексті викликів сучасності. Створення музею ініціювала Львівська міська рада у 2009 році. Спорудження музейного комплексу тривало впродовж 2014–2016 років.
Музей розташований у Львові на території колишніх ґетто (1941–1943 рр.) та пересильної тюрми №25 (1944–1955 рр.). Місце розташування визначає фокусні теми інституції: трансформації міського простору внаслідок нацистського та радянського насильств, досвіди людини в умовах екстреми. Ми формуємо майданчик для діалогу та дискусії навколо травматичних подій минулого та сучасного заради побудови толерантного та інклюзивного суспільства. Музей є прикладом меморіалізації суперечливої спадщини, яка лишилися після Другої світової війни та розпаду Радянського Союзу.
Серед основних напрямів діяльності інституції: виставкові та освітні проєкти, мистецькі інтервенції у міському просторі, співпраця з профільними інституціями України та інших країн, документування усноісторичних свідчень про трагічні події від 1930-х років і дотепер.
A municipal institution whose task is to explore, comprehend and present the tragic pages of the history of the mid-twentieth century in the context of modern challenges. The creation of the museum was initiated by the Lviv City Council in 2009. The construction of the museum complex lasted during 2014-2016.
The museum is located in Lviv on the territory of the former ghetto (1941–1943) and the transit prison (1944–1955). The location determines the focal themes of the institution: the transformation of urban space as a result of Nazi and Soviet violence, human experiences in extreme conditions. We are creating a platform for dialogue and discussion around the traumatic events of the past and present in order to build a tolerant and inclusive society. The museum is an example of the memorialization of the controversial legacy left after World War II and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Among the main activities of the institution: exhibition and educational projects, artistic interventions in the urban space, cooperation with relevant institutions of Ukraine and other countries, documenting oral evidence of tragic events from the 1930s to the present.
