Coins and medals

About the collection

With around 100,000 pieces, the museum's coin collection is the largest of its kind in northern Germany. It conveys 2600 years of monetary history, beginning with the oldest coinage from ancient Greece. It also includes coins from the Roman Republic and the imperial period as well as lead seals and coins from the Byzantine Empire. Among the medieval coins, the bracteates and coins from the area of present-day Lower Saxony are worthy of special mention. Other special features are the collections of ancient Greek coins from Olympia and German coins from the 19th century.
