About the collection
Dr Horst Egon Berkowitz (1898-1983) lived and worked in Hanover as a lawyer. Due to his Jewish origin, he was temporarily imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1938, but he survived the National Socialist era and worked as a so-called Judenkonsulent.
Even as a schoolboy, Horst Berkowitz collected stamps and coins. His coin collection later gained international importance, especially because of the 19th century German coins, which are represented in the collection in incomparable quality and completeness. Berkowitz himself sold his coins to the Sparkasse Hannover in 1972 for a very low price. The Sparkasse donated the collection to the August Kestner Museum in 2009.
